"YUSSOUF "-james Russel lowell. About the poet : j. R. Lowell was born on February 22,1819 in Cambridge, massachuselts. He died there on August 12,1891. He was poet,critic,editor and diplomat. He received a law degree from Harvard. In the 1840s he wrote extensively against slavery, he started writing at very young age. He could not get wide fame until the publish of "biglow papers". His other important works are 'the vision of Sir Launfal '-(1848),a long poem on the brother-hood of mankind and 'A Fable for Critics '(1848),a witty evaluation of contemporary authors. After his wife 's death in 1853,he wrote mainly essays on literature, history and politics. He was pre -eminently the scholar and man of letters. He was happily combining the creative, critical and social qualities of his nature. He also spent years as editor of 'The Atlantic monthly 'and later he edited 'The North American Review '. He served as minister to Spain and Ambassador to Britain. In poetry, novell's moods were various. He alone among New England poets possessed humour, whimsicality and the gift of kindly satire.
